Can we identify where the university is with respect to social networking We should try to identify how social networking would be useful to the university. I was impressed by a recent meeting in the Library organised by Michael OHaodha and speakers Gabriela Avram UL and Bernard Goldbach Tipperary Institute.
What about some social media training for university employees?
Things to do (second list)
1. Reception, amoung others, should be informed of events at least a week in advance. They would then be able to direct interested parties to the correct destination. Please feel free to add to this list.
On reflection there is a mountain of work to do. In no particular order I have started a "jobs to do list":
*communications strategy (see below)
1. Regarding the task force composition we can:
Invite interested parties.
Seek expressions of interest.
Convene a forum.
2. Perform a communication needs analysis.
3. Investigate the corporate communication needs.
4. Investigate departmental communication needs.
5. Prioritise the requirements.
6. Make recommendations.(to executive board)
7. Make recommendations.(to individuals/departments/divisions)
As I see it a basic set of information flow that exists in the university is as follows:
Communication within the university.
communication with students.
communication with staff.
communication between staff and students.
communication with the larger campus community.
Communication outside the university.
Further (related thoughts)
This does not include the or give any idea on the flow of internal or external communications.
Perhaps the taskforce needs to be selective in its approach.
It would be interesting to map the flow of communication in the university.
I don't think that we are only interested in the communication of information from the partnership committee.
*Please Note: I suspect that in the university we consider communication as only informing, a one way street if you will. It's as if we put items on a notice board, and expect people to read them. We probably do not have a structured mode of delivery and feedback, a communication strategy. I feel that one of the task force's first jobs is to develop an information delivery structure taking account of the points above, reflected in this reference http://www.ict.csiro.au/page.php?cid=29
